Civic Activism

In addition to volunteering time and expertise as a board member, I contribute to a number of other organization as either a dues-paying member or in their grassroots activities. Each of the organizations appeals to my sense of justice, education and equality and they each work to make this a better world. Below are those most important to me, with links to more information.

The Beca Project contributes to social projects which promote a culture of opportunity and hope for children by improving access to education and healthy living in Guatamala. My wife and I sponsor an educational scholarship which covers the cost of tuition, uniform, and supplies for six years of secondary education. Maria Osorio, our current student recipient, is a real treasure – very sweet and bright eyed. Her grades are very good and the family is deeply grateful for the support so she can continue in school.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society. I am particularly supportive of their no-holds-barred legal fights in the courts against racist groups, plus their Intelligence Report on hate in the media and exposure of dangerous “patriot” or “sovereigntist” groups that are threatening our Constitutional  form of government.

A space enthusiast since childhood, I first became involved with the National Space Society during their annual Legislative Blitz on Capital Hill in 2010. In contrast to other groups with which I’ve lobbied, members meet with not only their own elected representatives, but as many offices of Congress as possible as experts and advocates on space policy. As we see the accomplishments of NASA and private space firms such as SpaceX, it’s exciting to be a member of this organization.

UNICEF works in collaboration with local and international partners, including governments, UN agencies, and civil society. These partnerships are crucial to ensuring comprehensive and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance. They also permit the diverse array of programmes necessary to address the full spectrum of children’s rights, a fact that is especially important in emergencies, when these rights are most under threat.

The Secular Coalition for America is an advocacy organization whose purpose is to amplify the diverse and growing voice of the nontheistic community in the United States. I have only lobbied with them on one occasion, following the 2012 Reason Rally, and it was an eye-opener. In contrast to the warm reception given to constituents lobbying on other concerns, staff on Capitol Hill seemed surprised and even a bit cold during meetings with humanists and non-believers who lived in their Congressional district.
